Serena Williams broke out in dance after her Olympic victory the other day. And a lot of people are saying, “So, what?” But when sportscasters asked her about her moves, she said she didn’t know if it was appropriate to talk about the dance since it was popularized by a gang. At first, she said it was just a dance they do back in California. But the blogsphere lit up with posters saying it was actually the Crip Walk, a dance popularized by one of our country’s most notorious gangs. We’ve gone on the record here about our belief that art and action are two different things but what about this case? Was it appropriate?
