When I was texting a friend about Clint Eastwood’s performance at the Republican National Convention, the word correct on my phone changed “Eastwood” to “Asteroid.” Actually, it was funny and weird at the same time. Except when Eastwood said, “We own this country.” It isn’t funny that our country owns us in exactly the same way the bank owns your home if you have a mortgage. Yeah, that’s Ryan’s whole point. Each of us is saddled with something like 45,000 dollars in debt thanks to that soaring deficit. I like when he called Joe Biden, “a grin with a body behind it.” Eastwood is right that Biden has been reduced to a talking head these past four years. The funniest was when Eastwood said, “I cried, Oprah cried, the whole country cried when Obama was elected.” And ended on the punchline, “Oh, my God, I’m still crying now.” I was almost crying that it is so hard for the Republicans to let loose and be unscripted but the truth is, at the end of the skit, there were parts that worked and parts that didn’t. The empty chair was creative and symbolic at the same time.
